How to Select a Topic

Selecting an Essay Topic :

~ Write about what you know

~ Identify your audience

~Decide on the purpose of the essay

~Select a topic that will interest your audience

 

You need to decide the pattern of your essay organization :

E.g. Unemployment :

What cause the people to lose their jobs (cause and effect) =just state the cause and effect not offering the solution

How to combat unemployment (problem solution) = state the problem and giving solution

Unemployment in Indonesia 60s and in the 90s (comparison and contrast)

E.g Speaking anxiety :

what causes people to have speaking anxiety? (cause-effect)

how to overcome the speaking anxiety (problem solution)

speaking anxiety in SMA and University (comparison and contrast)

 

Selecting A Research Topic

It needs to do the following steps :

~ Brainstorm for ideas

~ Read general background information

~ Focus on manageable topic

~ Make a list of useful keywords

~ Be flexible

~ Define your topic as a focused research question

~ Research and read more about your topic

~Formulate a thesis statement
